The reference in numbers

Audemars Piguet launched the Royal Oak ref. 5402ST in 1972. Steel case, 39 mm wide, 8.2 mm thick. Octagonal bezel, eight hex screws, integrated bracelet. Calibre 2121 runs at 19,800 vph with 36 jewels and about 40 hours of reserve. No central seconds hand. Date at 3. Solid caseback.

Early A-series dials carry the AP monogram at 12 with no printed brand name. Later dials add "Audemars Piguet" under the monogram. This affects clone choice: a dial with the monogram alone copies an A-series watch, and a dial with monogram plus print copies a later one. Mixing the two is a visible error.

Pick first: the thin 5402 clone

Start with case thickness. The best 5402 clones measure 8.6 mm to 8.9 mm at the case middle and have no seconds hand. That pair of traits is the reference. A clone at 10 mm with a running seconds hand copies a Royal Oak shape and misses the 5402 entirely.

Second check: the dial. The tapisserie grid should be stamped, with ridges that catch light at an angle. Printed squares look flat under a lamp and sit lower in contrast. On a stamped dial the pyramids have small flat tops; on a print they run to a point.

Third check: the bezel screws. Eight heads, flush with the bezel surface, even gaps to the case edge. Countersunk or proud screw heads are a shortcut.

Fourth check: the date. A narrow, tall numeral set inside a small aperture with a thin bevel. Bold, wide numerals read wrong on a 1970s dial.

The 5402 has a solid caseback. Movement decoration does not show on the wrist, so do not pay extra for a decorated rotor on this reference. Spend the budget on the case and the dial.

Three options

  1. Thin tier, about $380 to $550. 39 mm case, 8.6 to 8.9 mm thick, no seconds hand, stamped dial, solid engraved caseback. Buy this tier.
  2. Mid tier, about $220 to $350. 9.5 to 10.5 mm thick. Print dial or a shallow stamp. Some units carry a seconds hand. Bracelet links show wider gaps at the clasp.
  3. Budget tier, under $200. 11 mm and up. Monogram font off, date window cut square, end links that do not sit flush to the case.

Alternative: if the 2012 anniversary look is acceptable, 15202 clones share the 39 mm case and run about 8.1 mm thick. They also come in more dial colours. The dial print, the bracelet link shape and the rotor differ from a 5402. Do not buy a 15202 clone and call it a 5402.

Checks before you pay

  1. Ask for a side photo with calipers or a ruler on the case middle. Numbers beat claims.
  2. Confirm the seconds hand is absent. A sub-dial seconds at 6 is also wrong.
  3. Look at the 12 marker and the print line. Monogram alone and monogram plus name are different eras.
  4. Check the bracelet end links against the case. A step or gap shows at the lugs.
  5. Check the caseback engraving depth. Shallow laser text looks grey next to deep engraving.

What no clone gets right

Bracelet flex. Genuine 5402 links move with small play and no rattle. Clones run tighter or looser at the pins. The bezel bevel is also sharper on the original; clones round the edge by a fraction. Caseback serial fonts and the depth of the "Royal Oak" text still differ on the thin tier.

None of these show at arm's length. Thickness and the missing seconds hand do. If those two are correct, the watch reads right on the wrist. If either is wrong, no dial upgrade fixes it.
