Short answer
Almost every replica sold as an IWC Da Vinci perpetual calendar is a Valjoux or Asia 7750 chronograph base with a decorative calendar module stacked on top. The dial carries the right words and the four-digit year window is printed, but the calendar logic underneath is usually a simple date, month and moonphase display that has to be corrected by hand. You judge these watches by whether the calendar tracks February and leap years, not by how the dial looks in photos.
Prerequisites
- A 10x loupe and a bright, angled lamp.
- Reference photos of the original ref. 3750 and 3758 dials, cases and casebacks.
- A timegrapher, or a phone timing app as a rough substitute.
- Written specs for the reference you are comparing against: case diameter, case thickness, lug width and subdial positions.
Inspection procedure
- Measure the case with calipers. A 39 mm diameter that reads 41 mm, or a 14 mm thickness that reads 17 mm, tells you the case was built around a stock movement rather than a slim calendar module.
- Check subdial positions and spacing under the loupe. On a faithful build the subdials sit where the reference puts them; on a module-less fake they sit wherever the 7750 plate allowed.
- Examine the four-digit year window. Look for printed discs that never move, gaps at the window edges, and year numerals in a different font weight from the rest of the dial.
- Run the leap year test. Set the month to February and the date to 28 in a leap year, then advance the hands past midnight. A true perpetual calendar steps to February 29. Most replicas jump straight to March 1 or stall.
- Work the crown. On a Klaus-module Da Vinci the crown advances every calendar indication. On a fake, the crown normally winds and sets hands only, and the calendar moves through recessed correctors or the chronograph pushers.
- Watch the moonphase for a full day. Note whether it advances once per day at a consistent hour, and note how it is corrected. Replicas often use a coarse disc with visible drift.
- Open the caseback with the correct tool and study the finishing. Look for perlage that stops at the module edge, engraved rotors with the wrong text, and screws that were blued with paint instead of heat.
- Time the movement. A 7750-derived build should read 28,800 vph, amplitude above 250 degrees, and a beat error under 0.6 ms when fully wound.
- Check the caseback gasket and the crown threads if you plan to wear the watch near water. Treat any depth rating on a replica as unverified.
What no replica gets fully right
The calendar programming is the real gap. A perpetual calendar handles month lengths and leap years on its own for decades. A complete calendar needs a correction at the end of February, and an annual calendar skips February 29. Replica modules sit in the second and third categories while the dial claims the first. Add the service problem: module parts are thin, hard to source, and easy to damage if you change the calendar between roughly 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., when the gear train is already engaged.

- Year window advances with the date, or at least moves when the crown is turned.
- Crown sets the full calendar, not just the time.
- Case thickness within about 1 mm of the reference.
- Movement beats at 28,800 vph with a clean timegrapher trace.
