Short answer

IW328092 does not appear in IWC's published reference lists. The digits do not fit the Ingenieur Automatic 40 block (IW3289xx) or the Pilot's Watch Mark XX block (IW3282xx). A watch sold under IW328092 is mislabeled or counterfeit. Ask for a caseback photo and a warranty card photo before you pay.

How IWC reference numbers work

Every IWC reference starts with IW, then six digits. The first digits point to a model family. Ingenieur Automatic 40 watches run from IW328901 to IW328904. Pilot's Watch Mark XX watches run from IW328201 upward. No catalog page, press release, or service document uses IW328092.

Reference numbers repeat across dial colors and strap options. A seller who claims IW328092 is a rare or deleted reference needs to show the paperwork. If the seller cannot, stop.

Six checks

  1. Caseback engraving. The reference number, serial number, and model name sit on the caseback. Compare each digit with the listing text. One digit off is the whole problem.
  2. Warranty card. IWC cards carry the same reference and serial. A card with a different number, or a blank card, is a warning.
  3. Movement. IWC in-house calibers carry the IWC name, caliber number, and jewel count on the rotor or bridges. Many replica movements carry no engraving or the wrong caliber code.
  4. Dial print. Look at the IWC signature, SCHAFFHAUSEN, and SWISS MADE. Letter height, weight, and spacing stay consistent on genuine dials.
  5. Case finishing. On the Ingenieur, the bezel screws sit flush with equal gaps at all five points. Replica cases show uneven gaps and raised screw heads.
  6. Price. A steel IWC automatic with an in-house movement sells new for roughly $6,000 to $12,000. A price under $1,500 is not a discount.

Check the number with IWC

IWC boutiques and authorized service centers can search a reference and serial against their records. Ask for the result in writing. A stolen-watch check adds a second layer. The Watch Register holds serials reported lost or stolen, and a search takes minutes.

Service centers also flag watches with swapped movements. A genuine case with a third-party movement fails that inspection.

If you already bought one

Photograph the caseback, the movement, and the paperwork. A credit card chargeback window runs 120 days from the transaction in most US cardholder agreements. PayPal gives 180 days for item-not-as-described claims. Keep the shipping box and the listing screenshots.

Do not send the watch back before the dispute is filed. Sellers who ship counterfeit goods often refuse the return and close the account.
