Short answer

The Rolex Submariner 124060 is a 41 mm dive watch with no date, a ceramic bezel and the caliber 3230. Replicas copy the outside. They seldom match the movement, the bezel action, the weight or the water resistance. Five checks settle most cases.

What the genuine 124060 is

Rolex released the 124060 in 2020. It replaced the 114060.

  • Case: 41 mm Oystersteel, 300 m water resistance
  • Lug width: 21 mm
  • Movement: caliber 3230, automatic, 70-hour power reserve
  • Bezel: unidirectional, black Cerachrom insert, platinum-coated numerals
  • Crystal: sapphire, no cyclops
  • Dial: black lacquer, Chromalight display with blue lume
  • Bracelet: Oyster with Oysterlock and Glidelock clasps
  • Retail: about $10,000 before tax

1. The bezel insert and the click

Genuine Cerachrom takes a polish and holds platinum numerals that sit flush with the ceramic. Replica inserts use painted or laser-etched numbers that read gray or flat white. Check the minute graduations and the pip at 12. Genuine markers have sharp edges and reflect light.

Turn the bezel. Genuine bezels move in 120 clicks with no play. Replica bezels feel gritty, wobble at the edge or have fewer detents.

2. The movement

This is the hardest part to copy. The caliber 3230 runs at 28,800 vph with 70 hours of reserve, a Chronergy escapement and a blue Parachrom hairspring. Replica cases usually hold one of three movements:

  • A decorated Asian movement with a 40-hour reserve
  • A modified ETA or Seagull base
  • A rebuilt "3230 clone" with correct bridge shapes and different finishing

Wind the watch and let it sit. A watch that stops before 60 hours is not a 3230. A watchmaker can read the balance and the escapement in minutes.

3. Case, crystal and case back

The 124060 has slimmer lugs than the 114060 and a 21 mm lug width. Replica cases often measure 40.5 mm or carry thicker lugs. The genuine crystal sits level with the bezel. A raised or domed crystal is a warning sign.

The case back is plain steel with a fluted edge. A display case back is always wrong. No genuine Submariner has one.

4. Dial print and rehaut

Genuine dial text uses a set serif and even spacing. The coronet has five points and a crisp outline. Replica dials show heavy print, tight spacing or a fat coronet.

Look at the rehaut, the ring between dial and crystal. Genuine rehaut engraving repeats ROLEX around the full circle and lines up with the minute track. Misalignment is common on replicas.

Since 2020 the dial reads SWISS MADE with a small crown between the two words.

5. Weight, bracelet and numbers

A complete 124060 with all links weighs about 155 g. Below 140 g points to a light case or hollow bracelet parts. Check the Glidelock clasp. It extends in 2 mm steps and closes with a firm snap.

Serial and model numbers are engraved on the case between the lugs, not stamped on the outside. Boxes, papers and cards are easy to copy. Rolex moved to a card-based warranty, so a 2020 watch has no paper warranty certificate.

What a replica cannot hide

Water resistance. A 124060 is rated to 300 m and pressure tested. Replicas test to 3 ATM or 5 ATM, if anyone tests them. Do not swim with a replica.

Service support. Rolex service centers refuse counterfeit watches and do not return parts. A replica has no factory service path.

Summary

Three checks cover most fakes: bezel action and insert finish, power reserve, and weight plus lug width. If a seller refuses a pressure test or a movement photo, treat the watch as a replica.
