Short answer
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6263 is a manual-wind chronograph with screw-down pushers. Rolex made it from about 1971 to 1988. No single detail proves a watch is real. A fake or a rebuilt watch usually fails two or more of the checks below. Verify the movement, the case, the pushers, the dial print, and the stamps before you pay.

- Bezel: fixed with a black insert. Insert material and scale markings change by production year. Compare with a documented period example.
- Dial: three subdials, no date. On Big Red dials the word DAYTONA sits above the 6 o'clock subdial.
Checks that catch most fakes
- Screw the pushers down. Genuine caps turn two or three full turns and seat flush against the case. Fake caps stop after a quarter turn, sit high, or do not thread at all.
- Count the beats. A 6263 runs at 18,000 vph. A reading of 28,800 vph points to a modern or a fake movement. A rotor under the caseback means the watch is not a 6263.
- Measure the case. 37.5 mm is the size. Common fakes run 39 mm to 40 mm.
- Read the dial print with a 10x loupe. Genuine print has sharp edges and no ink bleed. Fakes show dot-matrix edges, thick letters, and uneven spacing.
- Check the subdial spacing. The caliber 727 fixes the three subdial positions. If the spacing differs from a known 6263, the case holds another movement.
- Shine a UV light on the lume. Tritium on a 6263 stopped glowing decades ago. A bright glow means a relume or a fake dial.
- Look inside the caseback. Reference stamps, case maker marks, and finish should match the outside. Laser-cut or photo-etched stamps are wrong for the period.
- Read the serial between the lugs with a loupe. Numbers are stamped on a 6263. A serial outside known production ranges is a flag.
Parts that get swapped
Many watches sold as 6263 are real cases with fake dials, or genuine dials in service cases. Dials, bezels, hands, and crystals are the parts replaced most often. A watch with a real case and a fake dial is still a fake watch at the price asked. Ask for photos of the movement, the caseback stamps, and the serial before you buy.

What does not prove anything
Boxes, papers, and service receipts can be printed. A polished case can hide damage. A seller's story about an original owner does not verify a watch. Use an independent watchmaker who works on vintage Rolex. Ask for a written condition report. Rolex does not issue written authentication for vintage watches.
