Start with the reference, not the price
Rolex built two Submariner Date case sizes in the modern line. The 116610 measures 40 mm across. The 126610 measures 41 mm. Lug width on both is 20 mm. Ask the seller which reference the replica copies. A listing that says "Sub with date" and nothing else tells you nothing about the case.
Dial text matters. The 126610 carries "Submariner" above center and "Date" below it, with the crown between "Swiss" and "Made" at 6 o'clock. Print size and font weight are common tells. Compare seller photos against catalog images shot at the same crop.
Parameters to confirm before payment
- Movement: Asian 2813, Seagull ST2130, or a 3135 clone. Ask for the calibre name, beat rate, and power reserve. A 28,800 vph movement sweeps at 8 beats per second.
- Case steel: 316L or 904L. 904L costs more and takes a different polish.
- Crystal: sapphire with cyclops, or mineral glass. Sapphire resists scratches. Mineral does not.
- Bezel insert: aluminum on older references, ceramic on newer ones. Ceramic inserts chip. Aluminum inserts fade.
- Lume: C3 or C1 pigment. Ask for a dark-room photo with the same exposure as a genuine shot.
- Water resistance: ask for a pressure test result in bar. A 300 m claim with no test document means nothing.
- Weight: a steel Submariner Date on a full bracelet runs about 155 g to 160 g. A light replica uses a thin case back.
- Clasp: Glidelock on the 116610 and 126610. Check extension travel, which is 20 mm.
Movement tiers
Three tiers cover most stock. Tier one uses a 2813, a low-beat movement at 21,600 vph with a 36-hour reserve. Tier two uses a Seagull ST2130 or an ETA 2824 clone at 28,800 vph with a 38-hour reserve. Tier three uses a 3135 clone with a decorated rotor and correct crown height. Higher tiers cost more and fail less often on a watchmaker's timing machine.
Pitfalls
- Stock photos pulled from genuine listings. Ask for a timestamped photo of the actual piece.
- "Swiss made" printed on a dial that sits over an Asian movement.
- No return window. Get return terms in writing before payment.
- Wire transfer and crypto leave no chargeback path. Card payment through a processor gives you one.
- Customs seizure. CBP removes counterfeit watches at ports of entry. You lose the watch and the money.
- Resale. A replica has no resale market. Treat the money as spent.
Legal note for US buyers
19 U.S.C. 1526 bars import of goods that bear a counterfeit trademark. Personal use is not an exemption. CBP publishes seizure counts each year, and watches sit near the top of the category list. A seller who ships with no declaration paperwork puts the parcel at higher risk of inspection.
Questions to send the seller
- Which reference does this copy, 116610 or 126610?
- What movement is inside, and what is the beat rate?
- Do you have a pressure test sheet?
- What is the return window, and who pays return shipping?
