The pick

Buy the original if budget allows and you want the watch the replica copies. Buy the 3rd gen replica if you want the 1957 case shape at a low price and you accept a different movement, a different crystal and no service history. The gap between the two sits in the case, the movement and the parts supply. It is not cosmetic.

What the original is

Omega launched the Speedmaster in 1957 as reference CK2915. The case measured under 40 mm. It had a steel tachymeter bezel with no insert, broad arrow hands and no crown guards. The dial read "Speedmaster" with no "Professional" line. The movement was Caliber 321, a column wheel chronograph with a horizontal clutch. Omega stopped making the reference in 1959. Surviving examples trade at auction for six figures. The 1997 and 2007 reissues copy the dial and case with modern movements and sell for four figures used.

What the 3rd gen replica changes

Generation numbers come from sellers, not from a factory standard. A 3rd gen build in current stock means a 39 to 40 mm steel case, a hand wound Seagull ST19 or a similar Asian chronograph, a sapphire crystal and a printed dial. The parts that differ from the 1957 watch:

  • Movement. The ST19 beats at 21,600 vph. Caliber 321 beats at 18,000 vph. Pusher feel differs.
  • Crystal. Most builds use sapphire. The 1957 watch used hesalite.
  • Bezel. Font weight and the base 500 mark vary by batch. Ask for a photo of the unit in stock.
  • Caseback. Engraving depth and the seahorse outline are the first details a collector checks.
  • Dial print. Index shape and lume color shift between batches.

Options

Option 1: 3rd gen replica

Lowest entry cost. Sellers list these in the low hundreds of dollars. Parts are not interchangeable with Omega parts. Service means a movement swap, not a repair with original components. Resale is thin. Buy it as a look, not as an asset.

Option 2: used reissue, ref 3594.50 or 3574.51

The 1997 reissue gives the 1957 dial layout, a steel bezel and a documented Omega movement. Prices sit in the low four figures. It takes service from Omega. Case size runs larger than the original at about 42 mm.

Option 3: original CK2915

Six figure prices, small supply and a market that punishes redials. Buy only with papers and a hands on inspection. Not a daily wear watch at that value.

Checks before you pay

  1. Ask for photos of the actual unit, not catalog shots.
  2. Check subdial spacing at 3, 6 and 9.
  3. Check bezel font against a photo of a 1957 CK2915.
  4. Ask the movement name and beat rate.
  5. Ask the return window in writing.
