The pick

Buy a clone built on a Dandong 4130 movement with a platinum-tone case and a brown ceramic bezel. That build gets the subdial layout, the pusher spacing and the case thickness closest to the real watch. Listed prices sit from about $600 to $900. Tiers below that use a different movement and show it on the wrist.

What the genuine 116506 is

Rolex made the 116506 from 2013 to 2023. It marked 50 years of the Daytona. The case and bracelet are 950 platinum. The dial is ice blue, a color Rolex reserves for platinum pieces. The bezel is brown Cerachrom ceramic with a tachymeter scale, and Rolex fills the numerals with platinum through a PVD process. Inside is calibre 4130: column wheel, vertical clutch, 72 hours of power reserve, 28,800 vph. Case size is 40 mm. Thickness sits near 12.2 mm.

  • Case metal: PT950 platinum, stamped between the lugs
  • Dial: ice blue with sunray finish, three snailed subdials at 3, 6 and 9
  • Bezel: brown ceramic, platinum-filled numerals
  • Movement: 4130, 44 jewels, 72 h power reserve
  • Status: discontinued in 2023, replaced by the 126506

Where the clone stops matching

Metal is the first gap. Platinum has a density of 21.45 g/cm3. Steel is about 7.9. A platinum case and bracelet carry mass that a plated steel case cannot copy. The difference shows in the hand, not in photos.

Bezel numerals are the second gap. Genuine markers sit in recessed cavities filled with platinum. Clone markers are printed or laser-cut, then filled with paint or a thin film. Under a loupe, the edges differ.

Dial hue is the third gap. Ice blue shifts with light. Clone dials vary by batch: some run gray, some run too blue. Ask for daylight photos, not studio shots.

Movement is the fourth gap. A 7750-based clone puts running seconds at 9 o'clock and shifts the subdial spacing. It also adds thickness, near 14 mm. A DD4130 clone keeps the 4130 layout and gets closer on thickness.

Option 1: DD4130 clone, best match

Column wheel and vertical clutch, correct subdial order, case near 12.5 mm. Ask the seller to name the movement and send a rotor photo. If the answer is vague, walk.

Option 2: 7750-based clone

Lower cost. Correct outer look at arm's length. Wrong subdial spacing, thicker case, running seconds in the wrong place. Buy this only if the price gap matters more than the profile.

Option 3: budget tier

Printed bezel scale, plated case with a brass tone under wear, and a movement that often ships as a quartz chronograph. Skip it if you want a watch that reads as a Daytona to anyone who knows the model.

Checks before you pay

  • Movement name and a photo of the rotor
  • Case thickness in mm
  • Weight in grams. We found no published weight for the 116506. Owner reports put the platinum watch far above a steel Daytona, so treat any low number as a sign of a steel case.
  • Bezel photos in raking light, to see if markers sit in cavities or on the surface
  • Clasp code and end link fit

What no clone fixes

Resale, service, warranty and water resistance. A clone has no Rolex service card and no pressure test. Do not swim with it. Selling a clone as genuine is fraud.
