A fake Lange 30th Anniversary is a replica of the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 30th Anniversary, the limited edition that marked 30 years since the brand's 1994 relaunch. The genuine watch has an in-house L121.1 caliber, a solid silver dial, and a hand-engraved balance cock. Replicas copy the dial layout and the case shape. They do not copy the movement. Most run a Chinese base caliber under a decorative plate.
What the anniversary edition is
A. Lange & Söhne restarted watchmaking in October 1994 with four models: the Lange 1, the Saxonia, the Arkade, and the Tourbillon "Pour le Mérite." The Lange 1 set the design code that still runs through the line: an outsize date, an off-center time dial, a small seconds dial, and a power reserve scale marked "Auf" and "Ab." In 2024 the brand marked 30 years with anniversary editions in the Lange 1 family. Case metal, dial color, and piece count change from reference to reference. Where replicas differ
- Thickness. Many replicas measure 12 mm to 13 mm, against about 10 mm for the genuine case. The extra height shows at the lugs and the crown.
- Winding. The Lange 1 is manual wind. Replicas often use an automatic movement, and the caseback shows a rotor.
- Movement finish. No three-quarter plate, no Glashütte ribbing, no hand-engraved balance cock. Plated screws replace blued steel and gold chatons.
- Weight. Platinum and gold cases carry mass. Replicas use steel with plating, and the watch feels light in the hand.
- Date. Numerals on replica date discs run thin, and the two digits sit with different gaps than the genuine outsize date.
- Power reserve. On some replicas the power reserve hand never moves, because the base movement has no such function.
- Dial text. Spacing and font weight on the "A. Lange & Söhne" and "Made in Germany" print vary between replica batches.
Price and market
Asking prices on replica sites run from about $250 to $1,200. Listings above $1,500 for the same watch are common bait. Genuine Lange 1 references in platinum list in the tens of thousands of dollars and hold value on the secondhand market. A replica holds none. Papers, boxes, and a serial number do not prove a watch is real. Only the movement and the case measurements do.
Legal position in the US
Replica watches carry the Lange name and trademark. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit goods at import. Selling counterfeits in the US carries civil liability and criminal penalties under 18 U.S.C. 2320. The OECD put counterfeit and pirated goods at about 2.5 percent of world trade in its 2019 study. Buyers carry the risk of seizure, of a dead movement with no parts supply, and of zero resale value.

- Date disc material and the source of the font.
- Crystal material and caseback material.
- Weight in grams.
A seller who skips these questions is a seller with a stock photo. Ask for a photo of the caseback and a measurement of the case with calipers.
