A fake Lange dress watch is a copy of a German watch built by A. Lange & Söhne in Glashütte, Saxony. Genuine dress models start near $18,000 and reach past $60,000. Copies sell for $80 to $2,000. Three parts separate the two: the movement, the date mechanism, and the case metal.
Models that get copied
- Lange 1: 38.5 mm case, off-center dial, outsize date, power reserve hand marked Auf and Ab.
- Grand Lange 1: 41 mm case, same layout at a larger scale.
- Saxonia Thin: 37 mm or 40 mm, two hands, no seconds, no date.
- Richard Lange: 40.5 mm, central hour and minute hands, small seconds at 6.
- Little Lange 1: 36.8 mm, built for smaller wrists, some references set with stones.
Movement: the clearest difference
A genuine Lange 1 runs the L121.1, a hand-wound movement with a 72-hour power reserve. It carries a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, blued screws, and a balance cock engraved by hand. The engraving is cut with a burin, so the lines vary in depth and the floral pattern never repeats.
Copies at $80 to $400 use a China-made or Miyota movement. You see a plated brass plate, no chatons, and no engraving. Copies at $800 to $2,000 add a three-quarter plate and printed engraving. Under a loupe, print shows flat lines and dots. Cut engraving shows a groove with a bright edge and a burr at each turn.
Dial tells
- Outsize date: two separate discs on a genuine Lange. Many copies print both digits on one disc. The two windows on the real watch sit at one level and the font is fixed per reference.
- Numerals: solid gold, set into the dial. Copies glue plated brass or print the markers.
- Hands: blued steel on most references. Copies use painted steel or a chemical blue that looks flat grey in daylight.
- Text: the dial carries the Glashütte I/SA marking and a made-in-Germany line. Placement changes by reference, so compare against a dealer photo of the exact model.
Case metal and weight
Lange builds dress cases in 18k white gold, pink gold, yellow gold, and platinum. The current dress line has no stainless steel. A steel Lange 1 at a low price is a copy, outside a handful of historical pieces.
18k gold runs about 15.6 g per cubic centimeter. Type 316L steel runs about 8 g. A gold case of the same size weighs close to twice as much. Ask the seller for a photo of the watch on a scale before you compare. Look for a 750 stamp for 18k gold on the caseback and the lugs.

What good copies get right
A $600 Lange 1 copy can match the 38.5 mm diameter and the 20 mm lug width. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating is normal at that price. The strap and buckle look close at arm's length. The movement and the date discs stay wrong.
Checks before you buy
- Ask for a photo of the movement through the caseback.
- Compare the date font to a dealer photo of the same reference.
- Ask for the weight in grams on a scale.
- Look for the 750 gold stamp and the serial number.
- Ask for papers. Lange keeps a service record by serial number.
What is not known
No public count exists of how many Lange copies sit in circulation. Lange does not publish production numbers. Steel Lange pieces from the 1990s number in the single digits, so any steel example needs paperwork checked with the maker first.
